A NOTE ON THE INDEX · OCTOBER 2026
A shared history.
An open conversation.
Small projects deserve a place where their progress, players, and ideas can stay together.
Follow the game through its posts
Playtrace brings together games shared on r/aigamedev. A project’s original showcase and later updates sit on one timeline, with a direct link to every source.
We’re collecting the available history from the community’s creation in December 2022. The collection shows its progress as older records arrive. Newest updates appear first; choose Most updates to find projects with a longer development story. The first post starts the timeline, and each later post counts as an update.
Two different kinds of feedback
The small Reddit score on each card is the highest archived score of its source posts, never their sum. It is Reddit’s net score, not an exact count of upvotes or a live measurement. Hover or focus the score for the archive date and source coverage, or open it to visit the scored post. Missing observations stay blank and sort last. Existing scores are checked on Sundays for posts from the previous 35 days, in at most eight batched archive requests. Older posts retain their last observed score; the archive may lag behind Reddit.
Playtrace’s star ratings are separate. Weekly community picks need at least three browser ratings. We balance the average toward three stars with a weight of five ratings: (sum of stars + 15) ÷ (number of ratings + 5). This reduces the advantage of a tiny perfect score. Picks favor different makers; admin selections and exclusions take priority. Recent projects fill any remaining places, and the sixth slot stays the editor’s pick. A browser rating is not a verified person or purchase.
Useful feedback, open to everyone
Read the conversation or contribute without signing in. Start with quick multi-select questions, then add an optional note. Tell a maker what you enjoyed, where you got stuck, or what you’d like to try. Your choices, optional perspective (first look or played), display name, note, and optional ideal price are public. “Played” is self-reported, never verified.
“Your ideal price” is a suggestion for the maker, with no purchase commitment. Their pricing is always their choice. A Steam store price, when available, is shown separately in USD.
A random edit key stays in your browser so you can update or remove your contribution. Clearing browser data removes that editing access. Older account-based price responses stay private.
Game links and hosting
We store dated link checks: the requested and final URLs, response status, redirects and the reason for an incomplete check. Projects retain up to 52 observations; their pages show the 12 latest checks for the current URL. HTTP 404 or 410 is flagged as missing. Access restrictions, timeouts and DNS failures remain separate. A successful page response or store metadata observation does not verify that gameplay works.
Hosting labels describe the public domain, not the infrastructure behind a custom domain. Temporary file-transfer links can expire while development continues. Browser links become eligible for rechecking weekly if uncertain and monthly if reachable, within the shared queue budget; eligible does not mean checked on that exact day. Steam and itch.io use the existing store maintenance.
Before and after playing
Optionally save your interest in a project before playing, then return from the same browser to say how it matched your expectations. The first impression stays fixed once you add a follow-up. These answers contribute to public grouped statistics; individual answers and the browser edit key are not published. Only saved first impressions with a later answer are paired, and playing is self-reported. You can edit the follow-up or remove the whole comparison from the project page. Clearing browser data removes that editing access.
A quick rating, or a closer review
Rate a game from one to five stars without signing in. The public average counts one editable rating per browser and game. Use the separate star shortcut to save a favorite on this device, even without an account. If you sign in later, those favorites join your account and sync across devices. Offline changes retry when you reconnect. Clearing browser data removes favorites that have not synced.
Share a quick review, one question at a time, or follow a project’s custom questionnaire. These answers go privately to the editorial team and may be analyzed with Jev to spot themes. You can edit or remove your answers from the same browser. Public project comments remain a separate conversation.
A game of recognition
Name five games from their screenshots, chosen randomly from 20 curated projects with available builds. Some are demos or works in progress. The quiz uses real game names, checked against their project pages; Reddit post headlines are not quiz answers.
Finishing saves your choices and contributes to recognition counts. Replays count as new rounds, and skipped or unavailable images do not count as wrong guesses. These are guesses, not ratings or verified-player counts. You can remove this browser’s quiz answers from the game’s privacy controls. Quiz identifiers are kept separate from public feedback.
Sources, with their limits visible
The Arctic Shift archive helps preserve the community’s history. Collection starts when the community was created in December 2022. Posts tagged Demo | Project | Workflow are eligible; older posts without a flair need an individual review confirming they showcase a game. News, discussion, promotion, tools, and other explicitly labeled categories are excluded. Records can be delayed or incomplete. Projects are grouped when source authors and project evidence support the match. Closely matching reposts by one maker within 48 hours keep the newest entry, preserving the earlier sources and shared links. Source-described entries await editorial review.
Development stages reflect the maker’s posts and available store evidence. Link checks distinguish missing pages from blocked or unverified destinations. A page loading successfully does not prove its game is playable. Historical showcases can remain useful even when a build is no longer available. A Steam badge means the linked app was found in the store; a released badge requires Steam to list it as released. It does not verify the maker’s identity. Prices are for the US store, can change, and may differ in your region.
From comments to useful themes
Editors can combine recent Reddit comments and public Playtrace notes into cited summaries. Jev helps classify topics and reactions; editors check the quotes, correct labels and wording, and approve publication. Private questionnaire answers are excluded. Summaries cover a bounded sample from the last 60 days, link back to each source, and keep first looks, reported play and unknown context separate. Editing or removing a cited Playtrace note withdraws summaries that copied it. The public Insights report counts quick choices separately from reviewed comments; the totals are not unique players or predictions.
Keep the picture accurate
Previews belong to their creators. Original videos and GIFs stay linked to their source, with playback where the host supports it. Admins can select a clearer image or store an authorized replacement when a clip opens on a black frame.
Use Request a change at the top of a project to flag its image, link, details, or a removal. Requests go privately to the admin inbox. For wider site issues, send a correction.
Anonymous usage counts
We count page views, game-link clicks, favorites and completed feedback actions to understand what helps people discover games. These are action totals, not unique people or verified plays. We do not include account IDs, browser IDs, search text, referrers or written answers in these counts. Totals are retained for 180 days; random delivery IDs expire after one day. Temporary network hashes reduce spam and expire hourly.
This preference stays on this device. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control also disable these counts. Previously aggregated totals cannot be tied back to you.
